Claude Code from Anthropic is a terminal-based agentic coding tool that has evolved into a full platform. At version 2.1.126 with a CHANGELOG tracking over 200 releases, it now ships as native Rust-compiled binaries instead of its original Node.js foundation. The tool includes a plugin system with a marketplace, agent teams (Claude Cowork) for multi-agent collaboration, background agents, and a skills system using .claude/skills/ directories with SKILL.md files. MEMORY.md provides persistent memory across sessions.
Additional capabilities include Remote Control via claude.ai/code, sandbox mode on Linux and macOS, hooks for CI/CD automation, auto mode with Opus 4.7, a 1M token context window, vim mode, plan mode with Ultraplan, MCP integration, voice mode supporting 20 languages, and DESIGN.md support. The public repository lists 52 contributors, though the internal team is larger.
The plugin marketplace may prove more valuable than the core tool itself. This follows the VS Code pattern, where extensions became the primary reason users chose the editor. Claude Code’s plugin system allows third-party developers to add new capabilities without modifying the core agent. Combined with agent teams that coordinate multiple Claude instances on different parts of a codebase, it moves from being a coding assistant to an orchestration layer for software development.
