Gemini 3.8 Flash: Google’s Third Flash in Six Weeks, With a Defender-Only Cyber Model

Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash on September 2, three weeks after 3.7 Flash and its third Flash model in six weeks. Two versions share one core. Gemini 3.8 Flash is the general workhorse, open to developers at the same price as 3.7 Flash: $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output. Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber is a defender-only version for trusted security teams, distributed through Google’s Fairwind program. On DeepSWE v1.1, which tests fixing real software issues end to end, 3.8 Flash beats most larger frontier models at a fraction of the cost, and it reaches 54.9% on HLE-Verified, a hard reasoning test across science, humanities, and professional fields. Google credits a model that works harder, taking extra reasoning steps and calling tools iteratively at higher effort.

Teams running agents on 3.7 Flash can move to a model that solves harder software tasks for the same $0.75 per million input tokens, and a stronger workhorse now lands roughly every three weeks. The Cyber variant is not for sale to the public. Google says it prioritized fixing vulnerabilities over exploiting them, and reports 2.6 times more correct Chrome security patches than much larger commercial models, plus a critical vulnerability found in under two hours when that work usually takes months.

3.8 Flash Cyber also extends a governance pattern. Frontier cyber models increasingly ship behind restricted, defender-only gates, as with OpenAI’s Daybreak and Anthropic’s Mythos. The most capable security model is now the one most people cannot access.
