Google I/O 2026 launched Gemini 3.5 Flash, Antigravity 2.0, and platform numbers that dwarf most tech companies. Gemini 3.5 Flash outperforms Gemini 3.1 Pro on coding benchmarks: 76.2% on Terminal-Bench 2.1, 83.6% on MCP Atlas, and 4x faster than competing frontier models. Gemini Omni Flash creates and edits video from any combination of inputs. But the biggest shift is Antigravity 2.0, a standalone desktop app that replaces the IDE-centric Agent Manager with a stripped-down, agent-only interface. There is no file tree, no extensions panel, no traditional editor. Google calls it “unabashedly agent-first” and recommends developers “dual-wield” it alongside a separate IDE. The Gemini app now serves 900 million monthly users. Search AI Mode passed 1 billion.
The model quality impressed users, but the platform change did not land cleanly. Developers report the upgrade wiped their extension setups and API keys. A common complaint: “I need to see my project like a normal developer environment, not only through the lens of an AI chat.” Usage limits on Pro plans burn through within an hour. In direct comparisons, users rate Claude Code higher for codebase context and Codex higher for rate limits, while noting Gemini 3.5 Flash output quality can match both when it works.
Google is betting the IDE era is ending. The 900-million-user Gemini platform is being rebuilt around agents, not editors. Whether professional developers follow, or keep their IDEs open beside it, will determine if this bet pays off.
