A developer released OpenMontage, an open-source system that turns an AI coding assistant like Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot into a full video studio. You describe what you want in plain language, and the agent handles research, scripting, voiceover, asset generation, editing, and the final render. It is built from 12 production pipelines (explainers, trailers, documentaries, podcast clips), 52 tools, and more than 400 skills, which are markdown files that teach the agent each step. There is no central controller: the coding agent is the orchestrator, reading a pipeline plan and then one skill per stage, from research to script to edit to compose. With no paid keys it narrates with offline Piper text-to-speech, pulls footage from Archive.org and NASA and Wikimedia, and renders through Remotion. Sample shorts shipped for $0.02 to $1.33.
Most AI video tools give you one clip per prompt. OpenMontage runs the whole pipeline a real team would. A 70-second history short rendered for two cents; a Pixar-style 60-second short cost $1.33. A solo creator can build narrated explainers or documentary montages without paying generation APIs, and the system auto-checks every render (frame sampling, audio levels, file integrity) before showing it, so the agent does not hand back garbage.
This pushes the “skills as the application layer” idea further: instead of one big app, video production becomes hundreds of small skills your existing agent runs.
