Cursor, the AI editor maker now owned by SpaceX, started rolling out Origin on August 17, 2026: an early-beta git forge built into the editor. Repos created on Origin sit under cursor.com/codebase/{owner}/{repo}, where Cursor is the source of truth, so pushes land on Origin and GitHub is not in the path. Teams can also mirror GitHub repos, where GitHub stays the source of truth and Origin tracks it in real time, syncing pull request comments both ways. The beta ships repos, pull requests, code browsing, and GitHub sync. Access is Pro, Teams, and Enterprise only, repos are internal or private with no public option, and Cursor agents can create repositories, push branches, and open pull requests.
Cursor is selling fewer context switches: hosting, review, and agents on one surface. The timing helped. Origin shipped the same day GitHub ran an eight-hour worldwide outage, with repository downloads hitting a 50% error rate. Mirroring doubles as a hedge, since reads of a synced repo keep working from Origin’s copy and a forge-local branch is the supported write path while GitHub is down. It is still a beta: no branch protection, CODEOWNERS, signed commits, SSO, or secret scanning yet.
The code host is becoming the place where agents work, not just where code rests. Cursor’s bet is that owning the editor, the review, and the repository beats bolting AI onto a forge. Most teams will run both for now: GitHub’s 180 million developers and CI tooling still make it the safer system of record.
