Bloomberg published a fresh Dario Amodei interview on June 17, 2026, but the viral case attached to it spans three dates. In a July 25, 2023 Senate hearing, Amodei said the open models available then had “relatively limited” risks and that smaller models’ benefits could outweigh their costs. His “very dangerous path” warning concerned frontier systems expected two or three years later: once their weights are downloadable, the developer cannot monitor use, patch safeguards, or recall them. In an August 6, 2025 interview, he made a separate point. Model weights are not readable source code, although owners can fine-tune and run them without a vendor’s API. The 2026 coverage did not create those arguments. It put them back into circulation.
The dates prevent a narrow warning from becoming “Amodei says all open models are dangerous.” Anthropic’s current safety policy, version 3.4 since July 8, relies on controls such as access limits and live input and output filters that a downloaded model cannot receive. That control has a cost. A US government open-weight review, informed by 332 public comments, found the evidence insufficient to justify restrictions and cited wider research access, competition, and private local use. The dispute is about when a model becomes capable enough for irreversibility to outweigh ownership and independent research.
