Anthropic’s coding tool Claude Code now runs small add-ons called mods that change how it behaves and looks. A mod is a few lines of JavaScript or TypeScript that hooks an event: a tool call, a submitted prompt, a permission request, or part of the screen being drawn. One function can rewrite a prompt before the model sees it, block or retry a tool call, approve or deny a permission request, redact secrets from tool output, or draw its own pane. Mods ship inside plugins and install with /plugin in the CLI or desktop app. Features like the /diff view are now mods themselves.
Until now, customizing the agent meant waiting for Anthropic to ship a feature. Older hooks could run a script on an event, but they could not rewrite an event or redraw the interface; mods can. That lets a team enforce its own rules: hold any command touching production config for confirmation, log every tool call, or show a pipeline’s status in a pane. You can also ask Claude Code to write the mod and hot reload it live.
Anthropic calls this turning the agent into a platform and says it will move more built-in features into mods so the core stays small. Mods run with Claude Code’s own access to your machine and are not sandboxed, so only install trusted ones. On Team and Enterprise plans, a security mod called sec-default loads first to stop other mods from overriding your permission deny rules.
