Claude Fable 5.1 Gets Cheaper, With a Restricted Mythos Twin and Customer-Owned Data

Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5.1 costs about 25% less than Fable 5 after cache-read prices drop 75% to $0.25 per million tokens. The same model ships as Mythos 5.1, restricted to vetted cyber and life-science partners, with enterprise data kept in the customer’s own cloud.

Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on September 1 as the same model under two safeguard levels. Fable 5.1 is generally available, while Mythos 5.1 is limited to vetted partners in cybersecurity and the life sciences. Cache reads, where the model reuses context it has processed, fall 75% to $0.25 per million tokens, making typical workloads about 25% cheaper than Fable 5 and highly agentic work up to 45% cheaper, with input and output prices unchanged at $10 and $50 per million. On Terminal-Bench-Science, a new test of scientific coding, Fable 5.1 scores 52.6% at maximum effort, more than double Fable 5’s 24.7%.

Agentic tasks re-read the same context constantly, so cache reads usually dominate the bill. Anthropic also removed a barrier for regulated customers. Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, designed with more than 100 customers, store data in the customer’s own AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure and send misuse-monitoring signals to the customer for review. Firms that could not accept data retention get zero-retention privacy while abuse is still caught. Fable 5.1 is live now; the safeguards roll out to enterprises in phases this fall.

The same base model now ships with different safety settings. Fable 5.1 can find software vulnerabilities but not build exploits, and Anthropic says its cyber safeguards fire 60% fewer false positives, with biology safeguards 85% fewer on benign questions. Mythos 5.1, with exploit and advanced-biology access, stays gated to defenders, the same pattern behind OpenAI’s Daybreak and the original Mythos programs.
